Subject: First lasing announcement

Dear FEL Community

I would like to inform you the first lasing news from Japan.

On 20 June 2006, we observed the first lasing at 49 nm in SCSS Prototype Accelerator of XFEL.
The challenging idea: CeB6 single crystal thermionic cathode generates low emittance beam 1 A
from 500 kV DC-gun, followed by velocity bunching by factor of a few 100 times, measured
emittance was 3 pai.mm.mrad, made lasing!
